Chapter 1

Using the NUD.IST4 Guide

Purpose of the NUD.IST4 Guide

The NUD.IST4 GUIDE was developed to lead you safely and swiftly through the prerequisite stages of starting your own data analysis project with NUD.IST.

QuickStart

Those who want to start a NUD.IST project immediately should begin with QuickStart. This will provide you with a quick "how to" method for beginning your own project. It short-circuits the detail that will provide you with a conceptual understanding of NUD.IST -- how and why you interact with the software. You will still need to become acquainted with the NUD.IST interface and some new terminology. Browsing the Dictionary at timely intervals to familiarize yourself with new terminology may be helpful. I don't know how effective this QuickStart approach will be in the absence of a conceptual understanding of the software. I am very interested in your feedback about the effectiveness of a QuickStart approach: whether it works at all for you and ways it can be improved. Please send me a note if you have suggestions about this or any other part of the site.

Macintosh or PC?

Although I use NUD.IST on both Macintosh and PC platforms, this site was developed on my Macintosh. Therefore, all images will have the traditional "look and feel" of the Mac. For all but one or two functions, NUD.IST4 performs identically on the Mac and the PC (including both Windows 3.x, Windowns NT). Any functional differences in performance on these platforms will be so noted.

Your Web Browser: Netscape

The NUD.IST GUIDE web site was developed for use with the Netscape web browser. You can Download Netscape here. In terms of how I spend my time, I have far more interest in making NUD.IST accessible and understandable to users than I do in writing the technical specifications for this guide to work with Bill's Browser. So if you're a dedicated IE (Internet Explorer) user you'll just have to bear with me for the time being. Most functions on this site will work with both browsers though the appearance may differ (especially the fonts which look pretty obnoxious in IE).

Printing Pages in the NUD.IST Guide

The NUD.IST GUIDE web site was constructed using frames. If you're using Netscape you can print a frame (or window) by "slow clicking" your mouse on a frame until you see a menu appear on the screen. Select the menu item that says New Window with this Frame. After this, Netscape "kicks" the page (frame/screen) into a new browser window and you can print it as you would any web page.

Navigating the NUD.IST Guide Web Site

Use the Menu to the left of the screen to visit different sections of the site.

Throughout this Guide you will encounter many (hypertext) links. If you decide to take a side journey to visit one of these links, use the BACK button in your browser to return to the original page.
