Chapter 2

Getting Acquainted with NUD.IST

Chapter 2 of the NUD.IST GUIDE will help you to become familiar with the NUD.IST interface.

When you launch NUD.IST the first time you'll see a dialogue box like the one below in which you have the option to run a tutorial, start a new project, or open an existing project. If you want to open NUD.IST while you're working through this guide, choose Start a New Project. You will be prompted to name your project and enter your name. Be sure to choose a project name that will clearly differentiate one project from another. Your name and the project name will be included in the headers of future reports you generate for this project.

When you start a new project or open an existing project two windows called the Node Explorer and Document Explorer will open automatically, one above the other, on the left side of your computer screen as in Figure 2 below. These two windows will be your constant companion as you work through your project.

Figure 2. Node and Document Explorer windows.

Look closely at the Node and Document title bars in Figure 2: on a Macintosh the title bar is striped; on a PC the title bar will be blue.

In Figure 2 you'll notice that the striped title bar in the Document Explorer window appears 'dimmed' while the title bar in the Node Explorer window does not. The darker Node Explorer window is the current active window. Only one window can be active at a time. You can activate any window simply by using your mouse to click on the window.
