Chapter 2

Your Project Folder/Directory

Each time you create a new project NUD.IST creates a new folder (directory) that is specific to your new project. Inside this project folder (directory) you'll find four folders (directories) and a project start-up icon as in Figure 3 below.

Figure 3. NUD.IST Project Folder/Directory.

Commands Folder

You will use this folder to store Command Files you write. See Chapter 8 to learn more about Command Files.

Database Folder

This folder contains internal files that NUD.IST uses to manage your project. It is important to backup this folder/directory regularly.

Never modify files in the Database folder.
Changing Database files WILL BE FATAL!

Raw Files Folder

When you use a Command File to import multiple documents into your project, all documents must reside in the Raw Files Folder or they will not be imported into your project.

After you have imported your documents into NUD.IST, it's best to remove all documents from the Raw Files Folder and store them elsewhere on your computer.

If you do not remove the imported documents from the Raw Files Folder the next time you import documents NUD.IST will import duplicate copies of these files. NUD.IST will do this by adding a random character to the end of existing file names. Should you inadvertently import duplicate copies of your documents you will need to delete each of the duplicate documents. See Chapter 5, Deleting Documents.

Don't delete documents you've coded!

Deleting documents removes all coding
associated with the deleted documents!

Reports Folder

Use this folder to store and edit reports you create with NUD.IST. To learn more about making reports see Chapter 9 Analyzing Data.

Project Startup Icon

The Project Startup Icon that is created with each new project is a generic icon. It is not specific to any project so you can copy it to other project folders and use it to start any NUD.IST project. The startup icon works best if you leave it in the project folder. However, you can make an alias for the startup icon and place the alias on your desktop for easy access to your project.
