Chapter 7
Searching 101
![]()
Unlike word processors that allow you to search only one document at a time, NUD.IST allows you to run a single search across all your documents.
NUD.IST does NOT search Document Headers.
NUD.IST searches each text unit in your document including Subheaders.
BUT.... NUD.IST does NOT search ACROSS text units.
For example, if you are using Lines as Text Units and you run a search for a two word phrase where the first word ends on one line and the second word starts on the next line, NUD.IST will not locate the phrase. In cases like this you will need to adjust your search strategies accordingly. See Pattern Searches to learn how to search for a phrase that spans two text units. You can constrain or Restrict your searches to specific documents - but only if you've previously coded each of your documents in their entirety at a node on your Index Tree. This is why it's important to code your documents at the base data and case data nodes. To learn more about options for restricting your searches see the section Refine Your Search.
